Kathmandu Travel Guide: Himalayas, Food & Top Spots

Kathmandu travel guide with Himalayan views, local cuisine, and top attractions

Have you ever dreamt of flying over the Himalayas, eating authentic Nepali food in an ancient palace, and wandering the lively streets of Kathmandu, all in one trip?  That’s exactly what my recent journey to Nepal’s capital felt like: a blend of breathtaking views, soulful food, and cultural treasures.

In this blog, I’ll take you through my Kathmandu travel experience from the surreal mountain flight to dining at Bhojan Griha and visiting some of the city’s most iconic places. If you’re planning your first trip to Kathmandu, consider this your guide.

🌄The Mountain Flight Experience: Touching the Himalayas from the Sky

As previously stated, the event that stole the show for me was the trip to the mountain from Kathmandu. Just picture boarding a tiny airplane early in the morning and within ten minutes, the snowy Himalayas will be just beyond your window.

This trip offers a breathtaking view of Mt Everest, Kangchenjunga’s beauty, and other such unusual sights that no other trek can do in a single day. The crew even hands out a map of the mountains, so you can spot each majestic peak as the pilot points them out.

📌 Travel Tip: This mountain fly is worth booking early in the morning. The chances are higher, around 6-7 AM as the skies are usually clear. The left side of the plane will have the ideal position for alluring views. From this brief one-hour trip is not just a scream; it’s a lasting memory.

This one-hour flight is not just a journey, it’s a memory that stays forever.

🏨 My Stay in Kathmandu: Hotel Family Ties (P) Ltd.

One of the best decisions I made before arriving in Kathmandu was booking my hotel in advance. I stayed at Hotel Family Ties (P). Ltd., and it turned out to be a gem.

From my balcony, I could see the mountains glowing under the sunrise, a view that made every morning feel magical. What truly impressed me, though, was the hospitality of the hotel staff. They went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable, always greeting me with warm smiles and offering help whenever needed.

🛵 Exploring the City on a Bike

Kathmandu is a city best experienced at your own pace, and one of the smartest ways to do that is by renting a bike or scooter. If you have an international driving license, it’s incredibly easy to rent, and trust me—it makes all the difference.

Riding through the streets gave me the freedom to explore hidden alleys, stop by local tea stalls, and discover places I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. The sense of adventure and flexibility made my trip more personal and exciting.

📌 Travel Tip: Always carry your international license and a copy of your passport when renting. Traffic can get busy, so ride carefully and enjoy the journey.

🍴 Bhojan Griha: A Royal Nepali Feast

After soaking in the skies, it was time to taste Nepal on a plate. I visited Bhojan Griha, one of Kathmandu’s most famous traditional restaurants, set inside a restored 200-year-old Rana palace.

From the moment I stepped in, the warm wooden interiors, folk music, and dancers in traditional attire made me feel like I had time-traveled into Nepal’s royal past.

The food? A lavish Thakali thali with rice, lentils, curries, pickles, and the famous Nepali gundruk soup. Served on brass plates, the meal wasn’t just delicious; it was a cultural experience.

📌 Travel Tip: Go in the evening when Bhojan Griha hosts live cultural performances it makes the meal unforgettable.

🏙️ Places to Visit in Kathmandu

Kathmandu is a city where every street corner feels like history. Here are a few must-visit spots that made my trip special:

1. Kathmandu Durbar Square

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it includes palaces, courtyards, and old temples. Make sure to visit the Kumari Ghar home of the Living Goddess.

2. Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple)

From here you will have incredible panoramic views of the entire Kathmandu Valley! It really is a magical place with the fluttering prayer flags and cheeky monkeys running around.

3. Pashupatinath Temple

One of the holiest hindu temples, located on the bank of river Bagmati. A very spiritual experience, even when you’re an onlooker.

4. Boudhanath Stupa

It is one of the biggest stupas in the world and a place where Tibetan monks walk in circles praying that you simply must visit if you are ever to reach enlightenment, it had a very calming spiritual feeling and was quite well snap happy friendly.

🌍 Why Kathmandu Should Be on Your Travel List

Kathmandu is not just a destination it’s an experience. From soaring above the Himalayas to feasting like royalty at Bhojan Griha and exploring timeless temples, every moment feels alive with culture and adventure.

If you’re looking for a trip that blends nature, food, spirituality, and history, Kathmandu delivers it all in one unforgettable package.
